The 23-year-old was in the All Blacks training squad in 2012 but hasn’t yet made his debut due to fitness concerns expressed by Steve Hansen.

Japan a no-brainer for Super Rugby: Eddie

Japan is the only logical choice for Super Rugby’s expansion into Asia in 2016, the country’s head coach Eddie Jones told AFP on Friday.

Super Rugby will expand from 15 teams to 18 in 2016, with the return of the Kings from South Africa’s Eastern Cape and a team based in Argentina already previously confirmed.

Organisers of SANZAR confirmed earlier this week that Japan and Singapore would battle to fill the final team and a decision will be made in September or October.

Flying Fijian inside centre Nemani Nadolo is in doubt to don the national jumper at the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England, according to a story by Bleacher Report.

The report claims that his dual contract with the Crusaders in Super Rugby and Japanese side NEC Green Rockets will complicate matters on his availability next year.

Tonga international prop forward Eddie Aholelei has become London Welsh’s latest signing, joining the Exiles from Super Rugby side Melbourne Rebels.

Aholelei, 32, scored a try on his international debut against Japan in 2013 and has gone on to win six caps for Tonga, including two appearances in last month’s Pacific Nations Cup and starting against Wales at the Millennium Stadium in November.

The physical and tenacious prop, who can play loosehead or tighthead, will link up at London Welsh with Tonga team-mate and fellow prop Taione Vea.

“Firstly I would like to thank London Welsh for giving me this opportunity. I am honoured and humbled to be heading to England to represent the Club in what is undoubtedly one of the toughest domestic competitions in world rugby, the Aviva Premiership,” Aholelei said.

Crusaders left winger Nemani Nadolo and former national Under 20 centre Samuela Kerevi have been named in the Super Rugby team of the week by Planet Rugby.

Nadolo scored two tries for the Crusaders and has continued to shine after national duties the whole of last month for the Flying Fijians against Italy, Tonga, Samoa and the World Cup qualifiers against Cook Islands.

Viseisei youngster Kerevi in his first run on start with the Queensland Reds scored a try, made four line breaks, eight tackle busts, two offloads and 152 metres from 12 runs.

All Black great Bryan Williams has backed the growing clamour for New Zealand to play a Test series in the Pacific Islands.

The news comes hot on the heels of International Rugby Board CEO Brett Gosper’s statement the organisation would “love to see the All Blacks play in the Pacific, in Samoa, or anywhere in that region”.

Bryan Williams who knows the politics of the situation better than most. He played 38 times for the All Blacks between 1970 and 1978, helped coach Samoa in the 1991, 1995 and 1999 Rugby World Cups and held the position of New Zealand Rugby Union president during their 2011 World Cup triumph.
