Veitokani replaces Volavola

After four years of a stranglehold as pivot for the Flying Fijians, a new flyhalf in Alifereti Veitokani has been named for the return match against the Maori All Blacks in Rotorua.

Steep hill to climb

Rotorua attraction . . . geothermal lakes

The Flying Fijians will have a steep hill to climb on the return match in Rotorua on Saturday night after humbling the Kiwis 27-10 in Suva.

The end of the 62 year drought against the Maori All Blacks will have sent chills in the spines of both the big boys of the Pacific; New Zealand and Australia and will try to out-manouvre the tiny island nation and put them back in the backwaters where they belong.

Flying Fijians outclass Maori

The New Zealand Māori rugby team have lost for just the second time in the past 16 years, outclassed by Fiji in Suva on Saturday in the first match of their two-game series.

Billed as a chance for some of those overlooked for the All Blacks squad to prove something of a point, it instead turned into a fixture to forget for the visitors, as an energised and spirited home side put them away 27-10 at ANZ Stadium, for their first win over them in 62 years.

Flying Fijians coach John McKee . . . a big mountain to climb

Flying Fijians coach John MCkee has mapped out the two and half months left before the opening match against England at the Rugby World Cup on September 18.

“We have a big mountain to climb,” said McKee after a torrid Beep Test of the national squad at the Veiuto Primary School basketball courts in Suva on Thursday.

The Flying Fijians marched into camp last Wednesday with McKee having his work cut out with high expectations from the rugby mad nation and the support of an armada of financiers and investors keen on big returns for the Rugby World Cup in England. Continue reading
