International Rugby Board Chairman Bernard Lapasset has described the beginning of qualification for Rugby Sevens’ debut at the Olympic Games as an historic moment for the sport.
Rugby will return to the Olympic stage after a break of 92 years when 12 teams will compete in each of the men’s and women’s Rugby Sevens events at Rio 2016. As excitement builds within the global Rugby family, the road to Rio will begin this weekend for the world’s top male teams with the Gold Coast Sevens in Australia.

The International Rugby Board have embarked on a major rebranding programme which will see the organisation becoming World Rugby from November 19.

Rugby’s participation has increased by more than two million to 6.6 million players over the past four years.

Bach, Lapasset thrilled with Olympic debut

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has joined International Rugby Board President Bernard Lapasset and the global Rugby family in hailing the inaugural Youth Olympic Games Rugby Sevens event.

Bach was joined by a host of IOC and NOC members at a packed venue in Nanjing to see the newest Olympic sport and witness a compelling, exciting tournament with boys and girls teams from around the globe competing for the first Olympic Rugby gold medals to be awarded in 90 years.

Fiji will be playing their first match against Japan at 2.30pm today for the Rugby Sevens at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing and every try, tackle and pass from the men’s and women’s matches will be available live and on demand at Olympic.tv

Rugby’s rich heritage will be celebrated via one definitive Hall of Fame after the International Rugby Board announced it is to integrate inductees from the International Rugby Hall of Fame within its own IRB Hall of Fame property.

Under the deal agreed with the owners of the International Rugby Hall of Fame, 37 greats not already included within the IRB Hall of Fame will be inducted into the property, creating a unique record of those who have excited and inspired fans and shaped a sport that is now played by more than 6.6 million across 121 member unions.

International Rugby Board Chairman Bernard Lapasset has hailed a record-breaking Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens event as the perfect Olympic Games springboard.

A Rugby Sevens world record crowd of more than 170,000 fans over four sessions were treated to thrills, spills and spectacular tries as the sport’s brand of high-octane action and carnival atmosphere demonstrated why it is one of the hottest Games tickets.

With two years to go until Rugby Sevens make its Olympic Games debut, fans in the stadium and watching around the world were given an exciting taste of what to expect at Rio 2016.

Lapasset said: “Glasgow 2014 has been the ideal stage to showcase our sport and the perfect springboard to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.”

The International Rugby Board yesterday confirmed Hilton London Metropole as the venue for the World Rugby ConfEx 2014.

The event will take place on November 17-18 and will provide a unique environment for the global Rugby community to share knowledge, network and develop relationships. It will feature speeches, workshops and exhibitions on a host of key themes, including Rugby development and increasing fan engagement.

The conference will also provide invaluable networking opportunities with leading figures and decision-makers from across Rugby and other major sports.
