Bach, Lapasset thrilled with Olympic debut

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has joined International Rugby Board President Bernard Lapasset and the global Rugby family in hailing the inaugural Youth Olympic Games Rugby Sevens event.

Bach was joined by a host of IOC and NOC members at a packed venue in Nanjing to see the newest Olympic sport and witness a compelling, exciting tournament with boys and girls teams from around the globe competing for the first Olympic Rugby gold medals to be awarded in 90 years.

For the first time in the tournament’s history, the All Black Sevens are set to compete in Oceania’s regional Sevens competition.

The Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions (FORU) has announced that the 2014 Oceania Sevens will be played on 3-4 October, alongside the Noosa International Sevens on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Fiji takes out bronze medal

Fiji restored some sevens rugby pride after shutting out Kenya 12-0 to clinch the bronze medal at the Nanjing Youth Olympics in China.

Alipate Qaraniqio opened the scoring for Fiji forcing himself forward under the crossbar from a penalty five metres out which was converted by Waisea Daroko to take the lead in the first half at 7-0.

Fiji has been bundled out of the gold and silver medal contention after their 12-34 loss to France yesterday in their semi-finals of the rugby sevens competition at the Beijing Youth Olympics.

France soundly defeated Fiji who looked flat in attack and could not stop the French in their raids with pivot Arthur Retiere and winger Mathieu Voisin continually making inroads into the Fiji defence.

Ratu Kadavulevu School winger Timoci Meya scored three tries for Fiji in their 29-10 victory over the United States last night in their quest for gold at the Nanjing Youth Olympics.

The RKS student gave his best in the second win recorded by Fiji after defeating Japan 29-5 earlier in the afternoon.

Fiji will be playing their first match against Japan at 2.30pm today for the Rugby Sevens at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing and every try, tackle and pass from the men’s and women’s matches will be available live and on demand at Olympic.tv

International Rugby Board President Bernard Lapasset is anticipating a thrilling event that will showcase the sport and its values to new audiences around the world.

Fiji Sevens head coach Ben Ryan is firmly behind the new IRB Regulation 8 to allow players a second chance at international rugby.

A number of players capped by New Zealand and Australia but born in the Pacific Islands are hoping to represent the countries of their birth or ancestry at next year’s Rugby World Cup under the new rules.

Speaking exclusively to Planet Rugby, Ryan outlined the developments behind the regulation coming into action ahead of the Olympics in 2016.

“It’s all come about because IOC (International Olympic Committee) regulations for eligibility are different to the IRB, so the passport has become crucial,” said Ryan.
