The dress rehearsal at Eden Park in Auckland on August 31 will be the final stretch for the Flying Fijians to test their set pieces in the match against a strong Ikale Tahi Tongan side.

The inconsistencies in the lineouts and the scrums throughout the past five matches; two Maori and three Pacific Nations Cup games, will finally provide an indication of how the team will fare in the Rugby World Cup.

Blossoms capture Flying Fijians

The Flying Fijians were ambushed by an animated Brave Blossoms on Saturday at a packed Kamaishi Stadium signalling a warning to all opponents in the Pacific Nations Cup and the Rugby World Cup to beware.

The Japanese fired all cylinders unravelling an unprepared Fiji defence that came undone with crisp passing, daring advances and quick fire rucks by the Japanese forwards and backs.

Veitokani replaces Volavola

After four years of a stranglehold as pivot for the Flying Fijians, a new flyhalf in Alifereti Veitokani has been named for the return match against the Maori All Blacks in Rotorua.
Ben Volavola who was thrown in the cauldron of battle against England in the opening match of the 2015 Rugby World Cup in Twickenham was a surprise inclusion to fans. Continue reading

Flying Fijians outclass Maori

The New Zealand Māori rugby team have lost for just the second time in the past 16 years, outclassed by Fiji in Suva on Saturday in the first match of their two-game series.

Billed as a chance for some of those overlooked for the All Blacks squad to prove something of a point, it instead turned into a fixture to forget for the visitors, as an energised and spirited home side put them away 27-10 at ANZ Stadium, for their first win over them in 62 years.

Botia, Nayacalevu pairing to succeed

The new pairing of a midfield combination of Lepani Botia and Waisea Nayacalevu for the Flying Fijians opening match against the New Zealand Maoris is bold.
Bold in the sense that French overcomers Jale Vatubua and Semi Radradra have been rested with media reports claiming injury.

Flying Fijians coach John McKee . . . a big mountain to climb

Flying Fijians coach John MCkee has mapped out the two and half months left before the opening match against England at the Rugby World Cup on September 18.

“We have a big mountain to climb,” said McKee after a torrid Beep Test of the national squad at the Veiuto Primary School basketball courts in Suva on Thursday.

The Flying Fijians marched into camp last Wednesday with McKee having his work cut out with high expectations from the rugby mad nation and the support of an armada of financiers and investors keen on big returns for the Rugby World Cup in England. Continue reading
