Steep hill to climb

The Flying Fijians will have a steep hill to climb on the return match in Rotorua on Saturday night after humbling the Kiwis 27-10 in Suva.

The end of the 62 year drought against the Maori All Blacks will have sent chills in the spines of both the big boys of the Pacific; New Zealand and Australia and will try to out-manouvre the tiny island nation and put them back in the backwaters where they belong.

Flying Fijian Ratu Alipate Raitini  scorched away for a try from an offload up the middle before the half time break keeping his visiting Grenoble side in touch 14-17 against Toulon at the Stade Mayol on Sunday but eventully losing 28-61 in the Top 14.

The try was Raitini’s ninth touchdown of the season which will bode well for his chances for selection by Flying Fijian coach John McKee for a debut against France at the Velodrome in Marseille on Saturday.

Mourad Boudjellal is planning to take the IRB to court over payments to players on international duty in a groundbreaking move.

The outspoken Toulon president had already made his feelings clear earlier this season when he complained about having to pay the likes of Bryan Habana, Juán Martín Fernández-Lobbe and Bakkies Botha while they were away at the Rugby Championship.

Right winger Metuisela Talebula scored a try to help Bordeaux produce their performance of the season to hammer Clermont 51-21 at Chaban Delmas.

His opposite, left winger Napolioni Nalaga also scored his first try of the season for Clermont but it wasn’t enough as Bordeaux scored a total of six tries to record a good win.

According to a report in the French press, All Black centre Ma’a Nonu is on the verge of signing a deal with Toulon for after the World Cup.

The 32-year-old is currently sidelined with a broken arm and is unlikely to play again before next year’s Super Rugby season.

Clermont moved back to the top of the table as they handed Oyonnax a first home defeat of the season with a 19-8 win.

Meanwhile Grenoble showed they will be genuine contenders for a spot in the top six as they downed Racing Métro at the Stades des Alpes.

Elsewhere Brive and Lyon picked up vital victories at home to Bordeaux-Bègles and Castres.
