Mourad Boudjellal is planning to take the IRB to court over payments to players on international duty in a groundbreaking move.
The outspoken Toulon president had already made his feelings clear earlier this season when he complained about having to pay the likes of Bryan Habana, Juán Martín Fernández-Lobbe and Bakkies Botha while they were away at the Rugby Championship.
According to a report in the French press, All Black centre Ma’a Nonu is on the verge of signing a deal with Toulon for after the World Cup.
The 32-year-old is currently sidelined with a broken arm and is unlikely to play again before next year’s Super Rugby season.
Clermont moved back to the top of the table as they handed Oyonnax a first home defeat of the season with a 19-8 win.
Meanwhile Grenoble showed they will be genuine contenders for a spot in the top six as they downed Racing Métro at the Stades des Alpes.
Elsewhere Brive and Lyon picked up vital victories at home to Bordeaux-Bègles and Castres.
Clermont returned to the summit of the Top 14 standings in style on Saturday while Castres climbed out of the relegation zone thanks to a hard-fought win over Oyonnax.
Clermont moved above Toulon thanks to a bonus-point win over Lyon while Grenoble maintained their unbeaten home record as they battled past Bayonne.
Toulon crushed 14-man Brive 53-13 running in eight tries after Peet Marais’ red card in the first half.
Brive had come into the game as the least disciplined side in the Top 14, and they continued that trend when Marais received his marching orders for throwing an elbow to the head of Romain Taofifenua in a ruck after 25 minutes.
Toulon were stunned at Mayol by Stade Français 28-24, losing on home soil for the first time since January.
The reigning Top 14 and European champions paid the price for poor goal-kicking in the second half, and an underperforming scrum, but it was a fully-deserved result for Stade who showed a lot of ambition in their game.
