The recent debut of three Fijians in separate Tier One nation teams has highlighted the fact that the Fiji Rugby Union is sitting on a wealth of resources that if tapped dilligently and frugally will bring dividends in abundance. Continue reading

With the predominant culture of servitude and silence currently pervading the country, there has been a lack of critical comments on the final selection of the 31-man squad for the Flying Fijians to be announced on Friday. Continue reading

Teddy Thomas became only the second Frenchman ever to score a hat-trick on debut as France cruised past Fiji, 40-15 in Marseille.

The Racing winger had his first try inside 60 seconds, and added two more after the break, in a morale-boosting win for Philippe Saint-André’s charges.

Fiji have named a strong line-up for their November opener against France in Marseille with Akapusi Qera captaining the side.

Fiji have never beaten France in eight attempts and Philippe Saint-André knows he can’t afford to see that record broken in Marseille.

Les Bleus endured a disastrous June Tour to Australia as they were whitewashed by the Wallabies, a 6-0 defeat in the second Test proving to be their most impressive result.

Clermont wing Napolioni Nalaga will miss Fiji’s November Tests against France, Wales and the USA due to family reasons, Fiji coach John McKee told AFP on Sunday.

The prolific 28-year-old has scored nine tries in 16 internationals for Fiji, but won’t be adding to that this winter.

“He expressed that he didn’t want to be considered for this tour,” said McKee.

Newly named Les Bleus and South African born Scott Spedding could be donning the number 15 jumper against Fiji at the Velodrome in Marseilles on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Bayonne fullback replaces the injured Brice Dulin and already has an upper hand with main rival for the position Maxine Medard.

Medard is struggling to be fit with a groin injury sustained from his club game with Tolouse in the Top 14 last weekend.

Fiji coach John McKee believes the Pacific islanders could spring a surprise at next year’s World Cup, driven by international exposure and smartphone technology.

Kiwi McKee, who has only been in charge since May, is currently undergoing an exhausting European trip assessing the strengths and weaknesses of a side who will face France and Wales in November.

Three French Test rugby stars are rushed to hospital after a brutal machete attack at a Clermont training camp in the southern French city of Millau.

French rugby is reeling after three Test stars who play for glamour club Clermont were rushed to hospital after being attacked by thugs wielding machetes, knives and swords.

Benjamin Kayser, Julien Pierre and Aurélien Rougerie were set upon by up to 12 men in a street brawl after they had left a nightclub in the southern city of Millau. Clermont had been training in Millau ahead of the French club season.

The club said all three players were rushed to hospital, but none had life-threatening injuries.

Pierre, who with Rougerie was in the French team that lost the 2011 Rugby World Cup final to the All Blacks in Auckland, appeared to be the worst-affected, requiring surgery on ”deep cuts” to his hip.

”As they walked back to their hotel overnight Saturday, a group of players was assaulted by a dozen people carrying weapons including machetes, sabres,” the club said.

Local police reported the incident took place about 3am after the players went to a nightclub, where they may have argued with other revellers.

French newspapers suggested the players went to help a woman who was being harassed by some of the offenders on the dance floor.

“The whole club is both shocked and outraged by these incidents and is providing all the necessary support to the local authorities, who have opened an investigation into the attack to find and punish the perpetrators. In addition to helping the players involved, the club is also contemplating legal proceedings,” the club’s statement read.

The players were vastly experienced.

Rougerie, 33, is Clermont’s captain and has 77 caps for France. He played at wing or centre. Kayser, 29, was a hooker and has played 24 times for France. Pierre, 33, has 27 appearances for his country at lock.
