The Vodafone led consortium of sponsors for the Fiji Rugby Union – are paying for the Prime Minister and President of FRU Voreqe Bainimarama to attend the Rugby World Cup in England.
Vodafone Fiji Chairman Ajith Kodagoda says the decision was made after World Rugby announced it was not in a position to sponsor the Prime Minister.
He says as the head of Fiji Rugby, Bainimarama has a done a lot for the development and good administration of the sport – and deserves to be at the Rugby World Cup.
The Vodafone–led consortium of sponsors feel that Prime Minister Bainimarama’s presence will also provide a psychological boost to the team before their opening match against England at Twickenham this weekend.
The PM is expected to hand out the jerseys to the Fijian team and speak to the members before they run onto the field for their opening match.
Bainimarama is expected to be in London for a week.
The Fiji Rugby Union had offered to foot the bill for the Prime Minister’s trip, however this was turned down by Bainimarama saying the money would be put to better use to pay for the Flying Fijians needs at the RWC in London, England.
