Hallam Amos scored two tries as Newport Gwent Dragons opened their account for the season in the Guinness PRO12 with a 33-15 win over Treviso.

The young winger crossed twice in five first-half minutes as the Welsh region took control of the game to lead 17-3 at half-time.

They sealed a bonus-point with two tries at the start of the second half, through Ashley Smith and Jonathan Evans.

Treviso showed some fight with a couple of tries of their own in response, Matthew Luamanu and his replacement Leo Auva’a the players to go over.

But Jason Tovey added two penalties in the closing stages to kill off any hopes of a comeback.

Tovey had opened the scoring with an early penalty for the Dragons, and they extended their lead after 11 minutes when Amos intercepted Andrea Pratichetti’s pass to race home from halfway.

It didn’t take long for the home side to extend their lead, as Tovey was the creator with the initial break, before Amos finished on the left. Tovey converted both tries to make it 17-0 with just over quarter of an hour gone.

A Joe Carlisle penalty at least got Treviso on the scoreboard before the break, but things got worse for the visitors two minutes into the second half.

It came after a string of powerful runs from the home side, with the Treviso defence stretched and eventually Smith had enough space to sprint over.

The bonus-point score came five minutes later, Evans on hand after good interplay between Amos and Lee Byrne.

Treviso came back though, with Luamanu on the end of a move off a lineout to cut the deficit, before Andy Powell was sin-binned for taking out Simone Favaro.

When Auva’a went over after a powerful visiting scrum, it started to get a little nervy for the Dragons, with Carlisle’s conversion making it 27-15.

But Treviso were caught offside immediately, and Tovey slotted the three points, before another penalty in the final minute.

The defeat leaves Treviso still searching for a first success of the campaign, while the Dragons collected a first try bonus point in the competition in two years.
