Fiji has been bundled out of the gold and silver medal contention after their 12-34 loss to France yesterday in their semi-finals of the rugby sevens competition at the Beijing Youth Olympics.

France soundly defeated Fiji who looked flat in attack and could not stop the French in their raids with pivot Arthur Retiere and winger Mathieu Voisin continually making inroads into the Fiji defence.

Fiji had glimpses of gaining the upper hand but the slackness in anticipation in their setting up plays and defence let them down badly.

Fiji faces Kenya in the bronze medal playoffs at 1.30pm today while France will play Argentina at 2.30pm in the final to contend for gold and silver.

Argentina advanced to the final after defeating Kenya 19-12 in the semi-final.

Fiji lost to Kenya 12-17 in their last pool play yesterday and luckily scraped into the semi-finals even though was tied in points with Kenya and Japan after the pool matches. The points differential put Fiji and Kenya into the semis while Japan was relegated to the bottom two of the competition.

Japan took out the wooden spoon honours yesterday after losing 12-29 to the United States in the fifth and sixth playoffs.
