Argentina’s men and Australia’s women remain the only unbeaten teams in rugby sevens after Monday’s matches at the 2nd Youth Olympic Games being played at Nanjing’s Youth Olympic Games Sports Park.

France, Argentina and Japan each won two matches in the men’s tournament as early medal favourites Fiji had a poor day, and Australia, China and Canada all recorded excellent wins in women’s matches.

France beat Fiji 17-12 in their first match of the day, scoring twice in the first half through Arthur RETIERE (FRA) and Alex ARRATE (FRA). But Fiji hit back at the close of the half thanks to a converted Ratu Epeneri ULUIVITI (FIJ) try to reduce the lead to 10-7.

Both teams wrestled for supremacy in the second half with Fiji drawing ahead after Semi TUBACULE (FIJ) scored, but an Alexandre LAGARDE (FRA) try won it for the French just before the final whistle.

Fiji’s horror-run continued when they were thrashed 21-0 by a strong Argentinian side who are rapidly firming as gold medal favourites. Jose BARROS, Bautista DELGUY and Enrique CAMERLINCKX scored tries for the south Americans.

The Frenchmen returned later in the day to beat USA 22-17 where tries from Martin LAVEAU (2), ARRATE and LAGARDE kept France just in front of the USA all game.

In other results, Argentina dismantled Kenya 32-5 while Japan beat USA 22-10 and Kenya 27-24 to record its first wins of the tournament.

The Australian women’s team, who had a turbulent start on Sunday, came good today and pummeled USA in the first match of the day 38-0.

Tayla STANFORD (AUS) scored twice and Brooke ANDERSON (AUS), Dom DU TOIT (AUS), Shenae CIESIOLKA (AUS), and Raecene MCGREGOR (AUS) scored one apiece to hand the Aussies their third straight win of the Games.

Australia returned later in the day to thrashed Spain 41-0 with STANFORD scoring another pair of tries and five teammates also crossing in another easy win.

The Chinese women beat Tunisia 34-0 in their first match of the day and then returned to beat USA 29-7 in the later game.

LIU Xiaoqian (CHN) was instrumental in both wins. She scored twice in each game, WANG Tingting (CHN) crossed twice against Tunisia and GAO Yueying (CHN) bagged two tries for the day as well.

Canada kept its tournament on track with a 31-0 win against Spain 31-0 and a 43-12 victory over Tunisia, and is looking a likely medal contender.
