After expressing interest earlier this year, Fiji will be invited to bid for the right to host an HSBC World Sevens Series leg.

The hosting rights of the tournaments’ series will end in 2016 which will then give Fiji the chance to contest the hosting one of the IRB Sevens World Series legs and the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

IRB Sevens manager Beth Coalter told the Fiji Times the governing body had sought expressions of interest from all member unions, including Fiji.

“We have written out to member unions asking for expressions of interest,” said Coalter.

“When we receive responses we will choose which ones are possible and then send out full tenders and the process needs to be finished by October next year.

“The Fiji Rugby Union has to decide whether or not they want to send in a bid or not. But they have been included in the invitation.”

Coalter was in Fiji last year where she was able to access the organisation and facilities during the Fiji WATER 7s in Suva.

She said while there were some issues to be ironed out, Fiji stood a fair chance.

“Some of the organisation needs to be improved,” added Coalter.

“They obviously need to have good infrastructure with the organisation (of a tournament) and the IRB will obviously help.

“Things are evolving with the Fiji Rugby Union and I’m sure they’ll get themselves sorted and put a bid in for the IRB sevens series and the Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2018.”
