Time not on Speight’s side

In-form Brumbies wing Henry Speight will miss out on representing Australia and facing the British and Irish Lions by just a few months.

Based on his Super Rugby form, the Fijian-born speedster would have been an automatic choice in Wallaby coach Robbie Deans’ squad to tackle the Lions in June.

However, the current leading try-scorer (seven) in this season’s Super Rugby tournament has to wait until the end of October for the IRB to grant permission for Speight to wear the gold jersey – ruling him out of the Lions’ tour Down Under by just four months.

Playing for Waikato in the ITM Cup didn’t help his cause either, which has seen Speight’s case been set back.

“It’s a little bit (frustrating) but it is something beyond my control. So to dwell on it would only cause more frustration,” Speight told AAP.

“But it’s been over two and a half years and if I have to wait a few more months it won’t kill me.

“The thing I’m happy about is that the Brumbies are still playing the Lions so I can still say I’ve played them.”

It will be Speight’s only crack at the Lions, as the next time they grace Australia’s shores will be in 2025 when he is 37.

“All I know is that I’m not eligible for the Lions or for the Rugby Championship too,” he said.

“I don’t want to dwell on it too much because if I think about it too much then it might probably affect the way I’m playing for the Brumbies.”
