Waisale Serevi today resigned from his position as coach of the Digicel Fiji 7s team in order to pursue other interests.

“We met with Waisale today and after much discussion he said he felt it best that he resign as coach of the Digicel Fiji 7s team,” FRU chief executive Timoci Tavanavanua said.

“In his subsequent resignation letter, he stated that he wanted to pursue other employment opportunities and wished FRU all the best.”

Serevi took up his position as coach after the Rugby World Cup 7s triumph in 2005, leading the Digicel Fiji 7s team to success in the 2005-06 IRB World Series. Though the team finished runners-up this season, they did win the San Diego 7s and the Adelaide 7s.

“Serevi has given Fiji Rugby almost 20 years of outstanding service as a player, coach and rugby mentor,” Tavanavanua said. “His contribution to rugby in this country can never be understated. I am sure he will remain an icon for all hopeful young players for many, many years to come.”

“On behalf of everyone involved at the Fiji Rugby Union, I’d like to thank him sincerely for his unparalleled work in the game.”

One response to “Serevi resigns as 7s coach

  1. The FRU should have patience with our rugby coaches. Please don’t be too emotional in your leadership and in the decision that you make FRU. Whenever Fiji loses, emotionally you look down at the coach and sack him like what you did to Big Brad Johnston. Now you are bringing him back. You are doing the same thing to Serevi.
Where is your patience and your vision and development plans?
Nothing can be developed overnight and is ready or ripe again tomorrow to enjoy the benefits.
Look at the Coach of NZ Sevens . . . and learn from NZRU . . . please.

    Vinaka
